Q

overall did Henry have control over factions?

A

-It should be concluded that Henry maintained control over factions in the 1540s - he enjoyed manipulating main figures , such as those attempting to arrest Cranmer, like chess pieces revelling in the entertainment by court intrigue. Although it could be argued that the fall of gradiner of norfolk provides evidence to suggest that Henry was not in control due to the triumph of the reformists - removing Gardiner over a minor issue of refusing to give the king land. This was towards the end of his reign and so in a wider view over the course of the 1540s Henry’s control over the factions remained stable, further evidenced by the failed arrest of catherine howard by the reformists.
