What is basophilic stippling?
- presence of very small, dark blue bodies within RBC
- residual RNA
- polychromatophils
When is basophilic stippling seen?
common in immature RBC during response to regenerative anemia

What can cause basophilic stippling?
lead poisoning in dogs
What does the PCV and RBC look like in lead poisoning?
- normal PCV
- polychromatophils increases
What does lead bind with?
ribosomes
What are Howell Jolly Bodies?
- basophilic nuclear remnants
- seen frequently in responding anemia
What are Heinz bodies?
Red blood cell retractile bodies
Round structures representing denatured hemoglobin
What is another name for Heinz body?
Bleb
What causes Heinz bodies?
- certain drugs
- chemicals
- toxins
How is a Heinz body formed?
Hemoglobin becomes attached to a cell membrane
What do Heinz bodies look like when they are stained?
- pale to clear in diff-quick
- stains blue with methylene blue
What percentage of normal blood cells have Heinz bodies in cats?
Up to 10%
What can cause an increase in Heinz bodies in cats?
- Poor liver function
- onion toxicity
- Tylenol toxicity
