Health data Flashcards
major sources of health data
routine data - births and deaths
survey eg health survey for England
performance management - Quality and Outcomes Framework for GPs
study designs other than descriptive usually collect their own data
what is routine data
routinely collected and recorded in a systematic way
for administrative or statuary purpose
without specific research question in mind
eg healthcare use and outcome data (deaths, hospital admissions, GP consultations, prescriptions, immunisation uptake), exposures and hath determinant data (air pollution, crime stats), demographic data (census), geographical data (health authority boundaries, location of GP) health service provision (bed/staff counts)
Advantages of routine data
standardised cheap already collected over time comprehensive - population coverage, large numbers wide range experience in use and interpretation
Disadvantages of routine data
may not answer question
incomplete ascertainment - not every case recorded
variable quality
validity variable
ICD - international classification of diseases code - when change causes complications
need careful interpretation
Examples of health outcome data
Mortality Terminations of pregnancy Congenital anomalies Hospital episode statistics GP data e.g. QOF (see later) Road Traffic Accidents Notification of infectious diseases Cancer
cancer registrations - data
voluntary registration - national
from death certificates
incidence and survival info
linked to hospital admissions and national clinical audits
infectious disease - data
reported by dr
incidence
quality and outcomes framework
part of general medical services contract for GPs
reward quality care and improvements
collected in Quality Management Analysis system
administrative hospital admissions data
Hospital encode statistics covers all NHS hospitals and treatment centres
data quality still improving
episode - time spent in continuous care
admission - time in hospital, composed of many episodes
