What are individual and family barriers and facilitators that influence behavior change?
- Knowledge
- Perceived threat - “my dad has smoked his whole life and he’s 95 and still smokes so why do I have to quit, I’ll be good just like him”
- Personality type - OCEAN, some types are more likely to be rogue (O,E) and others are more likely to listen to what they’re told (C)
- Perceived self-efficacy “every time I work out I hurt myself” –> need to work with person to realize they can do more than they think
- Fear
- Motivation/Incentives
- Influencers and Networks - FAMILIES
What are community barriers and facilitators that influence behavior change?
What are the phases and stages of the theory of planned behavior and stages of change?
Determinants - your baseline, dependent on the factors shown in the image, demographics and personality can impact your willingness and ability to progress to the motivational stage i.e. your willingness to consider making a change
Motivational - the various categories of beliefs that influence your ability to actually make the change
Volitional - your ability to sustain the change of your own intention
With regards to the trans-theoretical model and stages of change, what are the various stages of change that a person can progress through?
What are some things that you can do as a physician to facilitate individual behavior change?
What are the “5 As” that you can use to guide you in clinical counseling with patients on behavior modification?
