group development Flashcards
1
Q
what is a group
A
- collecitve identity
- shared goals
- shared values
- interaction between members
2
Q
describe Tuckman’s 4 stages if group formation
A
- FORMING: group comes together for the first time to establish roles - requires strong leadership
- STORMING: confllict about roles in the team, cliques form, strong leadership needed, team pulling in tdifferent directions & decisions difficult to make
- NORMING: conflicts are resolved & roles are accepted, team interact more socially, good team unity
- PERFORMING: group works together to achieve common goals/ good cohesion
3
Q
define cohesion
A
how well a team works together
4
Q
define task cohesion
A
how well a team works together to achieve a common goal
5
Q
define social cohesion
A
how well a team interacts with one another
6
Q
describe Steiner’s model of productivity
A
actual productivity = potential productivity - losses due to faulty processes
- actual productivity = how well the athlete/ team performs on the day
- potential productivity = how well the team is capable of performing on the day (Steiner’s model suggests that groups fall short on their potential because of process faults)
- losses due to fault processes = poor motivation and poor coordination & cooperation
- poor motaivation = if all members of the team are not motivated to that same extent thye will pull in different directions & potential of the tram is not realised e.g. some team members on the hockey team play to make friends whilst others want to win matches
- poor coordination = ours due to lack of undertsanding of strategies and tactics (fail to listen) / poor teamwork ( poor communication & misunderstand eachothers role)
7
Q
identify strategies to reduce faulty processes, develop cohesion and improve group productivity
A
- train more regularly to understand tactics and strategies
- indentify individual contributioons to the group
- ensure individuals understand their role in the team
- improve fitness
- avoid social cliques forming
8
Q
explain the ringleman effect
A
- individual performance decreases as the group size increases
- e.g. a hockey team penalty corner drill continues to break downs due to timing of players involved not matching
- for exmaple a water polo team is not playing very well because one particular player is not trying very hard - social loafing
9
Q
describe social loafing
A
when individuals lose motivation due to losing identity when placed in a group and not feeling valued
10
Q
identify stategies to avoid social loafing
A
- identify individual contributions to the group
- ensure indivduals undertsand their role in the team
- regular extrinsic feedback
- improve fitness
- develop cohesion through team building exercises
