attitude Flashcards
define attitude
the belief or thought that produces behaviour towards an object, situation or person
what factors affect attitude
- attitude is influenced by the 3 components of the triadic model
- something we learn through past experiences and from observing parents, peers, coaches, role models (people more signifiant to us are more likely to influence our beliefs)
- emmotional reactions to an attitude object, whether we like or dislike it, also depends on past experiences and influences attitude
- our behaviour is not always consistent with out attitude
describe the triadic model (components of attitude)
CAB
- cognitive component: beliefs
- e.g. positve attitude believeing training is worthwhile whereas negative attitude is believing training is not worthwhile
- affective component: emotions
- e.g. positive attitude is enjoing training whereas negative attitude is not enjoying training
- behavioural component: behavioural response
- e.g. positive attitude is taking part in training whereas negative attitude is not taking part in training
what are the 2 methods of changeing attitude from negative to positive
- persuasive communication
- cognitive dissonance
when using persuasive communication what should you consider
1.status of messenger e.g. use role model or someone respected so message has an impact
2. quality of message:e.g. ensure message is detailed & knowledgeable & communication is relevant
3. characteristics of person being persuaded: e.g. might be intelligent enough to understand the message, but may not accept it.
4. the situation: make environment you are giving the message in comfortable e.g. have discussion in players faveourite coffee shop to convince gymnast to start flexibility exercises and make usre timing is right e.g. to persuade footballer to stop diving, do it after a match they won without diving
descrube cognitive dissonance as a method of changing attitudes form negative to positive
- dissonance means to create discomfort/ disharmony by changeing 1 component of the triadic model to create an uneasy feeling
- to change cognitive component to educate the athlete by introducing new information
- change the affective component to make it fun
- this will help bring attitude components in line and remove discomfort
- the more discomfort an athlete feels the greater their desire to change the attitude
