Use “Present simple”:
S + am/is/are + N/adj
To talk about habit and routine or repeat actions, often with adverbs of frequency like usually, often…
Use “Present continuous”:
S + am/is/are + V_ing
- To talk about actions at the present moment, happening around now and temporary situation, often with “at the moment” and “now”
- for future arrangement, often with other people and giving a time / place
Use “Be going to” + V_inf
To talk about your intentions. In this situation, you might not know all the details of your plan
To talk anout a firm plan in the future
Note: not use “be going to” with “go”
& “come”
Use “ Will” for prediction (future simple)
S + will/ shall + V_inf
- Use will or won’t to talk about future
- Use phrases like: next year, in the future..
- Use verbs like: think, believe, hope,
predict… to introduce predictions
Use “present perfect” for:
S + have/ has + V3 + O
- Experiences in our life up to now, often with ever & never
- Event that happened in the past when the exact time is not important
- Recently completed actions
Use “Past simple” for:
S + was / were +….. S + V2 /V_ed
- Completed events/actions in the past a particular time
- An action/ A situation covering a period of time that started & finished in the past
- Use with words “Already”, “Yet”
Use present perfect continuous:
S + have/has + been + V_ing + O
- To emphasize that an action or situation that started in the past is still in progress
- To emphasize the length of time of an action
- For repeat recent actions
Use “the past perfect”:
S + had + V2 / V_ed + O
To say that one event happened before another past event
Use “The past continuous”:
S + was/were + V_ing + O
- To talk about something in progress at a particular time in the past
- to give background information in the past
Use “Be supposed to be”: được cho là
To show opinions based on what you have read and heard
Use “Would like/love to” + V_inf : Muốn
To show your hopes for the future
Use “Be thinking of + V_ing”: đang nghĩ về
