Grade 9 Rebellion Upper and Lower Canada Flashcards
What was the main demand behind the 92 Resolutions?
Responsible government
What is responsible government, explain.
It is when the members of the executive council be chosen from amongst the elected members of of the legislative assembly.
Why were the people in Upper and Lower Canada upset with the Parliamentary system?
Because the governor had too many powers and could veto any decision made by the people.
Who was Louis Joseph Papineau?
He was the leader of the Parti Canadien (they were a majority party in the legislative assembly). He would eventually lead the people of Lower Canada to rebel against the British authorities.
What was the response to the 92 Resolutions?
Lord John Russel sent back the 10 resolutions which rejected all of the demands made in the 92 Resolutions. To make matters worse, the only power that the legislative assembly actually had (the right to increase or deny taxes) was taken away from them.
Who was the leader of the British Party?
William Lyon Makenzie
Why were the people even more upset at the political structure in Lower Canada in comparison to Upper Canada?
Because the governor and his council members (those who had all the power) were all anglophones and the majority of people (those with little or no power) were Francophones.
