What was the demographic situation of aboriginals around the 1850s?
The population had decreased because nomadic hunters had lost a great deal of their land due to colonial expansion. (meaning the British were beginning to populate the Western parts of Canada.)
Why did Lower Canada receive a large influx of Irish immigrants during the 1830s and 1840s?
Crops had been hit hard in Ireland and the people were starving. Many abandonned their lands and came to Canada in hopes of a better life.
Why did the Irish settle in Lower Canada which was predominantely Francophone?
Because the Irish were Catholic and wanted to live amongst Catholic institutions.
