Grade 5: Force, Motion & Energy Flashcards
Is a push or a pull?
Force
It can cause a change in motion. It can also change an object’s direction and it may also act on objects to change their shape or size.
Force
Force may be described in terms of _______ and _______.
magnitude
direction
The strength of the force is referred to as ________.
magnitude
Magnitude of a force is measured in units called ______.
newton (N)
The ____ tells in which way a force is acting on an object.
direction
What is Newton’s first law of motion or the law of inertia?
An object at rest tends to remain at rest. An object in motion tends to move at a constant speed in a straight line unless acted upon by an unbalanced external force.
Is the force that opposes motion?
Friction, sometimes called frictional force.
What is unbalanced force?
To have unbalanced force means that the force applied in one direction is greater than the force applied in the opposite direction.
What happened when unbalanced forces are acting on an object?
There is change in speed and or direction.
What is Newton’s second law of motion or the law of acceleration?
An object’s acceleration is directly proportional to the net force acting on it and is inversely proportional to the object’s mass.
What do you mean by direct proportion?
It means that when one factor increases, the other factor also increases.
What do you mean by inverse proportion?
It means that when one factor increases, the other factor decreases.
What do you mean by balance force?
When two forces are the same strength but act in opposite direction. They do not result in motion.
What is Newton’s third law of motion or the law of interaction?
For every action, there is always an equal and opposite reaction.
How does location relate to motion?
If there is a change in location in relation to a fixed object, there is motion.
The fixed object is called?
reference point.
How do you define motion?
As a change in position in relation to a reference point. It can be described using the terms speed, velocity, or acceleration.
What is the formula in getting the speed?
Speed = Distance/Time
or
v = d/t
What is speed?
Is the distance traveled by an object per unit time.
Provide other examples of units of distance over time?
meters per second = m/s
centimeters per second =cm/s
meters per hour = m/h
kilometers per hour = km/h
Why do you think that the direction in which a typhoon moves is very significant?
It will warn residents if the typhoon is likely to hit in their area or not.
Speed with direction indicates?
velocity.
What is the significance of the arrow above the speed sign formula?
Without the arrow, v simply means speed and indicates no direction. With an arrow, the symbol represents velocity and has direction.
How do you specify direction in expressing velocity?
We may include the major directions (east, west, north, and south) or the directions in between (northeast, northwest, southeast, and southwest). We may also mention the destination to indicate direction.
What is acceleration?
The change in velocity at a given time.
Under what conditions may acceleration be observed?
- Change in speed
-accelerating (speeding up)
-decelerating (slowing down) - Change in direction
acceleration (a) may be expressed as a change in velocity per unit time.
(refer to your book page 141 for the formula)
What are factors that affect acceleration?
amount of force applied
amount of mass
How do you increase the acceleration of an object?
By increasing the force exerted on it. Increasing the force applied to an object increases its acceleration.
What would happened when the force exerted is constant in terms of acceleration?
an object with more mass accelerate less.
Can you try to summarize the factors that affect acceleration.
In summary, if mass is constant, increasing the force, exerted on an object will increase its acceleration. If the force exerted is constant, an object with more mass accelerate less.
What is a hydrofoil?
Is a mode of water transportation. It moves faster than ships and boats. They have underwater wings that are similar to airplane wings.
A hydrofoil wing develops an upward force called ____ as it moves through the water.
lift
