Public Information is
information that is of interest to the general public

Internal/private information regarding MPD members (home address, telephone number, disciplinary actions, etc)
What can members provide to the media with approval of the unit’s lieutenant or above?
Basic facts
Who can release information regarding policies, procedures, rules, personnel issues, etc?
COP, Command staff and designated members
In the absence of the PIO, who shall handle media requests?
Assistant District Commanders (Captains)
Who may release information regarding the details at a major event?
Field Commanders
Who handles the release of official crime statistics?

What information can be released to the public?
- Factual information concerning a person involved in an incident, unless prohibited by GO
- Circumstances surrounding incident (time and place, possession and use of weapons, pursuit, arresting officers, general description of items seized, etc)
- Lookouts or other information that may assist in the investigation
- PD251s, PD10’s, lost or stolen property, etc.
What information cannot be released to the public
- Confidential information
- Information on victims, witnesses or cooperating persons or information that could be used to identify them. Identity of deceased persons prior to NOK notification.
- Opinions on innocence or guilt
- Nature of evidence/tests
- Criminal history or police records
- Names, addresses, photos of juveniles
