What is a critical Incident?
An incident where a members suffers a behavioral health injury/illness where: member took direct authorized police action and was seriously wounded; member was victim of crime that could have resulted in being seriously wounded or killed and the crime was related to that member’s performance of duty; took direct authorized police action that resulted in the fatal wounding of another.
What is Maximum Medical Improvement?
A condition/state that is well-stabilized, unlikely to change substantially in the next year; further recovery or deterioration is not anticipated.
What is Medical Leave
Authorized leave taken by a member due to a serious health condition; can be combo of sick leave, annual leave, advanced sick leave, comp time, and LWOP. (POD sick leave is NOT medical leave).
Medical Emergency
Acute symptoms of sufficient severity (including pain) that the absence of immediate medical treatment could reasonably be expected to result in placing the member’s health in serious jeopardy, serious impairment to bodily function, or serious dysfunction of any bodily organ or part.

What defines an on-duty POD injury/ilness?
member was legally on duty, as evidence by T&A records and engaged in work for the Department
What defines an off-duty POD injury/illness?
Member was required to take police action in the District of Columbia, even tho the member was legally off-duty.
What is a serious health condition?
Physical or Mental illness, injury or impairment that involves inpatient care in a hospital, hospice or residential health care facility, or continuing treatment or supervision at home by health care provider.
How long does the Department have to make a POD determination?
Within 30 Calendar Days the member reports the injury/illness. After 30 days, the injury/illness is presumed POD until formal ruling is made. Department cannot “take back” the non-chargeable sick leave or medical costs incurred after the 30 days.
When will a member be processed for medical retirement?
172 or more cumulative workdays in a less than full duty status over a 24-month period from any ONE POD or non-POD injury/illness, including complications. This does NOT include pregnant women.
