GI - Stomach Flashcards
What does the Cardiac/esophageal sphincter connect?
Stomach and esophagus (prevents food from passing back)
What does the pyloric sphincter connect?
The stomach and the duodenum
What does gastrin do?
Stimulates secretion of:
Gastric acid and intrinsic factor from parietal cells;
Pepsinogen from chief cells
*promotes gastric and intestinal motility, mucosal growth*
What does somatostatin do?
Inhibits secretion and action of many hormones
Localization of gastrin?
Gastric antrum, Duodenum (G cells), Pancreas
Localization of somatostatin?
Stomach, Small intestine, Pancreas (D cells)
Helicobacter is a _______ Gram-__________ bacteria.
Spiral; Gram-negative
What is the triple therapy typically used for treating Helicobacter Gastritis?
Antacid (Omeprazole) + Antibiotic (Amoxi) + pepto
How do we treat Physalloptera in dogs and cats?

Fenbendazole 50mg/kg PO 3days
What is Zollinger-Ellison Syndrome?
Syndrome including:
Chronic vomiting,
Thickened gastric wall,
Hypertrophy of pylorus,
Gastric ulceration
(Effects of high gastrin levels)
Reflux esophagitis,
+/- diarrhea…
Accompanied by a neuroendocrine gastrin-secreting tumor usually in the pancreas…
On blood work, may show anemia, low protein
What is octreotide?
Treatment for gastrinomas (inhibits gastrin)
What is the probable cause of Bilious Vomiting Syndrome (BVS)?
Reflux of duodenal fluid into stomach and subsequent irritation of gastric mucosa
How do we treat BVS?
Frequent small feedings,
Prokinetics,
Gastroprotectants,
Novel protein diets?
