CRF Flashcards
What percentage of nephrons must be lost before we see azotemia?
75%
What might you see on hematology and biochem in a CRF patient?
Nonregenerative normo-chromic/cytic anemia;
Varying K+, Ca2+;
Increased P- (sometimes)
Azotemia (increased BUN +/- Crea)—> should both increase proportionately
Decreased Alb
Metabolic acidosis
How do we define chronic kidney disease?
Loss of functional renal tissue due to a prolonged process (generally >2 months); usually progressive and irreversible
What is the first sign we will see in CKD patients?
PU/PD - indicating failure of urine concentration (blood panel may be normal!)
What does the failure to synthesize calcitriol lead to?
Hypocalcemia and renal secondary hyperparathyroidism
How do we get uremic gastritis with CKD?
The body fails to catabolize peptide hormones (e.g. gastrin)
