What are Gestational Trophoblastic Diseases (GTDs)?
A group of disorders arising from abnormal proliferation of trophoblastic cells
What is a hydatidiform mole?
A type of gestational trophoblastic disease resulting from abnormal fertilization
What are the two types of hydatidiform moles?
Complete and partial hydatidiform moles.
What is the primary symptom of a hydatidiform mole?
Vaginal bleeding
What is the typical appearance of a complete hydatidiform mole on ultrasound?
A “snowstorm” appearance with an enlarged uterus and no fetal parts.
What is the main difference between complete and partial hydatidiform moles?
Complete moles have no fetal tissue
What is the most common malignant form of GTD?
Choriocarcinoma.
What is the role of hCG in GTDs?
hCG is produced by trophoblastic cells and is used as a marker for diagnosis and monitoring of GTDs.
What is the treatment for most malignant GTDs?
Chemotherapy
What is the risk factor for developing GTDs?
Pregnancy at a young age (<20) or older age (>35)
