Abnormal labor Flashcards
What is abnormal labor?
Abnormal labor, also known as dystocia, is a deviation in the progression or duration of labor, affecting 20% of all pregnancies.
What is precipitous labor?
Precipitous labor is when the interval from the onset of regular uterine contractions to delivery of the fetus lasts less than 3 hours.
What is protracted labor?
Protracted labor is when the latent phase lasts more than 20 hours in nulliparous women or more than 14 hours in parous women.
What is arrested labor?
Arrested labor is the complete cessation of labor progression at 6 cm or more of cervical dilation with membrane rupture and no cervical change for over 4 hours with adequate contractions or over 6 hours with inadequate contractions.
What is the second stage of labor?
The second stage of labor is the period from full cervical dilation to the delivery of the baby.
What is the third stage of labor?
The third stage of labor is the period from the delivery of the baby to the delivery of the placenta.
What is a nonreassuring fetal heart tracing?
Nonreassuring fetal heart tracing indicates potential fetal distress, often requiring immediate medical attention.
What is macrosomia?
Macrosomia refers to a baby with an estimated fetal weight (EFW) greater than 4000 grams, which can complicate labor.
What is cephalopelvic disproportion?
Cephalopelvic disproportion occurs when the baby’s head is too large to pass through the mother’s pelvis.
What is malposition?
Malposition refers to the baby being in an abnormal position in the uterus, such as occiput posterior.
