Q

Explain the different types of clouds

A

There are three different types of clouds:
1. Cumulus clouds.
2. Stratus clouds.
3. Cirrus clouds.
1. Cumulus clouds: they are fluffy clouds. They form low in the sky and can bring heavy, short showers. Some can grow into tall dark clouds that bring very heavy rain.
2. Stratus clouds: They are big blankets of dull cloud that hang in the sky. They hang low in the sky and can cover it all. They can give a light drizzle but no real showers.
3. Cirrus clouds: they are thin wispy high clouds. It’s freezing up there so they are made of ice crystals. They can mean bad weather is on the way.

Q

Explain frontal rainfall

A

When a warm air mass meets a cold one, the warm air mass is forced to rise over the cold one. The rising air cools. The water vapour condenses. Clouds form. It rains. So we get frontal rainfall.
