Biology - Protists (test + lab copy) Flashcards
What are the typical characteristics of all protists? How are they defined?
Protists usually live in moist or aquatic conditions. They are all eukaryotic organisms and mainly unicellular. They can be defined by the way they obtain food (heterotrophs or autotrophs) and their method of movement.
What type of protists are amoeba? Draw a diagram for it with an explanation
Amoeba (or rhizopods) are animal - like, unicellular protists that are a type of proozoa.
collective name for plant like protists
diatoms
both unicellular and heterotrophic
amoeba and paramecium
What type of protists are seaweed
plant like protist, type of algae
What is the difference between a seaweed and a land plant
Unlike a land plant, a seaweed does not have specialised cells and is simply multicellular. A seaweed does not have roots, leaves, or a stem like a land plant. Instead, it consists of blades, a thallus, float, a stipe and holdfast.
some examples of protists
euglena, diatom and algae (plant like/photosynthetic), amoebas, plasmodium and slime mold
What is the oral groove in the protozoan used for
taking in food
What are rhizopods
Rhizopods are one of the three categories that protozoa can be divided into. They are also called “false feet”. They change the shape of their cell membrane to extend their cytoplasm and grow pseudopods (false feet) which they use to move around and also feed themselves.
What are protozoa
Animal - like protists that are mainly heterotrophs
What are ciliates
They are a type of protozoa that have a hair-like structure called cilia which helps them to move around and obtain food. e.g. paramecium
what are flagellates
they are one of the three types of protozoa which have a whip-like structure known as flagella. This helps them to move. Some examples are giardia and euglena.
what is the difference + similarity between fungi like protists and typical fungi
fungi like protists have cell wall made of cellulose, unlike typical fungi which have a cell wall made of chitin. However their similarity is the way that they feed (by decomposing).
what are two examples of fungi
yeasts and mushrooms
what are examples of fungi like protists
slime molds, water molds and plasmodium
