BST Resources Handout Flashcards
a what are resources?
they are anything that has utility and adds value to our lives. some examples of resources are air, water, food, plants, animals, minerals, metals, etc.
define natural resources
these are resourcces that occur on earth and are formed entirely through natural processes with no human effort/skills required. some of these were either formed millions of years ago, or are continuously being renewed (quickly) by nature. For example, fossil fuels, air
Define renewable resources
These are also known as sustainable resources. These are either available in a near infinite quantity in nature or are continuosly being repenishhed through natural processes (for example trees growing in forests). Because of this, they are generally less costly to obtain and involve fewer negative impacts on the environment.
Define non - renewable resources
they are also referred to as exhaustible resources, meaning they are either present on earth in very limited quantites (for example minerals) or take very long periods of time to renew (for example fossil fuels take millions of years to form). These resources are generally more costly to obtain. They are less environmentally friendly, as it is a very hefty process to take these out of the ground. We must evaquate the area, bring in big trucks, pipes, bulldozers, demolish the surrounding buildings, etc. All of this is quite expenicve as well.
define human resources
these are the people who make up the workforce and contribute to the country’s economy in some way. These resources do not include the children and the elderly/ill people. These people must have a certain knowledge, talent, or skillset to provide something useful and make a positive change. For example, doctors, nurses, teachers, garments workers, farmers, fishermen, rickshaw pullers, traffic police, etc.
What are minerals? what must we do with them?
These are (naturally occuring) inorganic compounds that are found in the earth’s crust. In order to utilise these, they must be extracted from the earth. This process of extraction has a negative impact on the surroundings. however, these resources are crucial in the development of a country.
what do mineral resources do?
they provide the raw materials for large industries and also provide energy supplies either directly (by burning coal) or indirectly ( by generating electricity) These are categorized into three groups : metallic minerals, non - metallic minerals, and energy resources.
What are metallic minerals
They contain one or more metals. They usually occur as mineral deposits and are a great heat & electricity conductor. Some examples are iron, copper, silver and manganese. Bangladesh previously had small copper reserrves (discovered in rangpur and dinajpur), however, over the years it has depleted.
What is limestone
It is a type of a non - metallic mineral. It is a sedimentary rock whcich can be found near the surface/under the ground. Limestone deposits are found near St. Martin’s Islands, Sunamganj district in Sylhet and Joypurhat district of Rajshahi division. It used in cement for construction purposes and steel and gas.
Describe white/china clay
The deposits of this mineral are found scattered districts of Netrokona, Sherpur, and Naogaon. It is used to make sanitary ware and ceramics in households.
Describe glass sand
The deposits of this mineral are found mainly in Sylhet, Chittagong and Rangpur. They are used to manufacture glass, chemicals and paints.
What are some examples of non renewable energy resources?
Natural gas, coal, oil and nuclear energy
Describe Natural Gas
- most important energy resource of Bangladesh
- non - renewable, clean and efficient source of energy
- transferred through a system of pipelines to be distributed to homes and industries for cooking and heating purposes
- CNG (natural gas in its compressed form) is used as fuel for vehicles and to generate electricity
- cheap source of energy
Describe coal in bangladesh
Coal was discovered in underground reserves in the northwest region of Bangladesh. Currently there are 5 coal mines. The Barapukuria coal mine is located in Dinajpur and is the only active coal mine in Bangladesh. Coal is used to generate electricity (by burning it in factories and using that energy).
Describe oil in Bangladesh
There are oil and gas fields in Sylhet, Chittagong, Dhaka, and Barishal. Titas gas is the country’s largest natural gas and crude oil producer. Bangladesh imports oil to meet local demands for fuel and electricty generation.
