Biology Soil Flashcards
What is soil made of?
Soil consists of tiny fragments of rock, with humus, water, air and living organisms in it. Soil comes from erosion, which takes place over millions of years. Humus is the decaying remains of dead plants and animals.
How are rock particles of soil formed?
Rock particles come from rocks which have been broken down by many processes/weather factors over the course of a thousand years, like rain water, frost and the pressure from growing plant roots.
Rock particles have different __________ names according to their different _________. For example: ________
names, sizes.
sand, clay, gravel, etc.
Soil is _____ soil and is very important for us to ___ ______, etc
surface, grow crops
What is humus and how do plants benefit from it
Humus is the sticky decayed liquid produced by decomposers. (When plants and animals die, their remains are decomposed by fungi and bacteria, and humus is produced in the process). Humus provides plant food in the form of dissolved minerals, essential for healthy plant growth.
