BST Soil Handout Flashcards
Define the Tropical Evergreen Forest
They are mainly found in the Chittagong Hill Tracts and Sylhet. These trees do not shed their leaves and remain green throughout the year. Different trees like chaplish and garjan are found here.
Why do we need Tropical Evergreen Forests in Bangladesh
They are important because they provide bamboo, wax, honey and medicinal plants.
Define Tropical Deciduous Forests
They are found in Mymensingh and Tangail. These trees only shed their leaves during the winter months. Sal is a commercial timber tree in Bangladesh.
Describe Sal trees
These are found in Tropical Deciduous Forests (e.g. Mymensingh and Tangail). They are commercial timber trees, and their timber is very strong, durable and fireproof. They are used in electricity poles, boats, furniture and railway sleepers.
Describe Mangrove Forests
These are mainly found in Sundarban in Khulna. The sundari trees are mainly found in these forests which is why there is the name Sundarban. These trees are commercially valuable as they are used in bridge building and other construction purposes
Why are forests so important
They play a key role in providing locals with consumable products. They also contribute to protect the natural environment (In BD), by helping to stabilize the soil and giving protection from river erosion. Forests also provide a natural barrier in times of disasters.
What is deforestation and why must it occur
Deforestation is the large scale removal of trees from forests because of the increasing population which leads to the greater need for land (for agricultural, housing and industrial purposes) and demand for timber and fuel.
What should the government do to prevent deforestation
They should enforce strict laws so that people are discouraged to not cut down trees and instead organise events to plant more trees.
Bangladesh is an __________ country and that is only possible with the appropriate ______ _____________ and ___________ _____________
agricultural, soil resources , favourable climate
What issues are being faced by the agricultural sector
they are facing soil fertility problems which is mainly because of the use of harmful chemical fertilisers, pollution, overcropping and other environmental factors
