General OPS: Operating Philosophy Flashcards
What are the three protocols for normal checklists?
- Read-and-Do
- Tasks
- Flow Pattern
When are Read-and-Do items completed?
When reading the Checklist (May include verifying tasks+flows completed)
When and in what order are tasks completed?
- Completed PRIOR to reading the checklist
- No prescribed sequence, just completed at a logical time
What is required if a checklist is interrupted?
-Start from the beginning
If completed to THE Line:
-Start from the Line
How are FFOD items denoted?
With “FFOD” before items
When is a flight considered to be a FFOD?
- First Flight Of the Day for an aircraft
- An aircraft is returned to service from a MX facility
What are two ways that checklists are conducted?
- Challenge+Response
- Silent
How are Silent checklists identified?
In the General section of the SOPM for that checklist
How are Challenge and Response checklists identified?
In the General section for the SOPM for that checklist
Which checklists are conducted silently?
- Safety Check
- After Takeoff
- After Landing
- Terminating
Who calls for the Checklist on the ground?
Captain
Who calls for the Checklist in flight?
Pilot Flying
What are the Checklist conventions?
- Switch Position / Annunciation
- Complete
- Checked
- Set
- CP/FO
- CP OR FO
- L/R
- Select
- Deselect
- Extinguish
When both crew-members are required to respond, who responds first?
As specified on checklist
What are the switchlight (SL) positions and indications?
- Select: SL is pressed or verified to be in the IN position
- Deselect: SL is pressed or verified in the OUT position
- Extinguish: SL bulb is extinguished and no indication present or the correct indication observed for the position of the SL
How is the expanded checklist outlined?
- Flows and Task items
- Each checklist item in detail
- Any checklist specific verbiage
What are the communication protocols and procedures for crew members?
- Nonessential communication avoided during high workload phases, especially during Sterile Cockpit
- Normal comms to ATC: FO (Ground) PM (In Flight)
- Comms to PAX or FAs may be performed by any crewmember as directed by CP or checklist
- FWD FA is primary contact who shall relay bried to second FA if needed
What are the Chime/Light signal system procedures?
- Single HI Chime: Select either NO SMKG or SEAT BLTS sign ON or OFF
- HI/LO Chime: Select CHIME switchlight
What are the various briefings?
- Crewmember preflight briefings
- Initial crewmember briefing
- DEP WANT
- ARR WANT
- Debrief
How and by whom are the Crewmember preflight briefings conducted?
- The Captain to include all crewmembers
- Only pertinent items listed
How and by whom are the Initial crewmember briefings conducted?
- Captain after reporting for duty and prior to pushback, on the first day of the trip, or if a crewmember change has occurred
- According to the I-C-E listing
How and by whom are the WANT briefings conducted?
- By PF W: Weather A: Airport/Area (DEP/ARR) N: Pertinent NOTAMs T: Threats
How and by whom are the Debriefs conducted?
- Any crewmember
- Conducted for each flight segment
- After a threat encountered
- End of a flight segment
What are the callouts for ALTITUDE?
- When altitude set via bug, pilot call selected altitude, other pilot verifies and verbally confirms BEFORE a vertical change
- PF: “1000 TO GO”
- PM: Verifies and States altitude leaving and the altitude for level off
What are the callouts for AUTOPILOT?
-PF: Calls for “AUTOPILOT ON”
-PM: Engages autopilot on “AUTOPILOT ON”
Both verify FMA
What are the callouts for SPEED?
- Airspeed selected via bug is called out and then verified and verbally confirmed (Does not apply to SYNC button use)
- Deviations are announced and corrected
- Takeoff airspeed crosscheck
What are the callouts for EXCHANGE OF FLIGHT CONTROLS?
- “YOUR CONTROLS” / “MY CONTROLS”
- “MY CONTROLS” / “YOUR CONTROLS”
- Should include heading/altitude/speed
What are the flight automation protocols and procedures for the Flight Control Panel (FCP)?
- Autopilot ON: PF manipulates FCP
- Autopilot OFF: PF calls for desired modes from PM
- Mode and ALT selections must be confirmed and crosschecked in the FMA
What are the flight automation protocols and procedures for the Flight Management System (FMS)?
-Must be coordinated in all phases of flight
-All flight plan inputs must be visually confirmed and crosschecked as accurate by both pilots before EXEC
> Pilot who inputs data: “CONFIRM”
> Once crosschecked, other pilot: “CONFIRMED”
> EXEC selected
-Prior to Taxi, PF is manipulator of FMS
-During Taxi, FO is manipulator of FMS
-Autopilot Engaged: PF is manipulator of FMS
-AP Engaged/High Workload: PF Commands changes, PM performs
-Autopilot Off: PF Commands Changes through PM
