Gangrene Flashcards
The following are types of _________?
Headed
Non-headed
Bone
Huan Tiao (GB-30)
Gangrene
What is headed gangrene?
An acute suppurative condition occurring between the skin and muscle
Etiology & pathogenesis include damp-heat and fire.
What is non-headed gangrene?
An acute suppurative condition occurring in the bones or joints.
What is bone gangrene?
A condition that grows deeply on the bones due to toxins, similar to pyogenic.
What is Huan Tiao gangrene (GB30)?
An acute suppurative condition occurring at the Huan Tiao area, similar to acute pyogenic hip arthritis.
The following are patterns of ____ Gangrene.
Damp-Heat
Yin Xu w/ Toxic Heat
Qi + Blood Xu w/ Toxins
Headed
What are the treatment points to treat Headed Gangrene due to Damp-Heat?

What are the etiologies + pathogenesis for Headed Gangrene?
External:
External wind-heat, damp-heat –>disorder of Qi and Blood circulation –> toxins accumulating in skin and muscle
Internal:
Emotions –> LR Qi stagnation –> transforming into fire
Overstrain, excessive sexual activity –> KD Yin deficiency –> fire
Improper diet –> SP T&T dysfunction –> damp-heat
What is Headed Gangrene?
A condition mostly seen on the neck and back where the muscle is thick in middle-aged individuals.
Where is Headed Gangrene mostly seen?
On the neck and back.
In which age group is Headed Gangrene most commonly observed?
Middle-aged individuals.
What is Headed Gangrene, deficiency pattern?
A deficiency syndrome mostly seen in aged people or people with diabetes.
What 2 types are categorized under non-headed gangrene?
Bone Gangrene
Huan Tiao Gangrene
What are the etiologies + pathogenesis of Non-Headed Gangrene (Bone or Huan Tiao)?
Deficient constitutions after disease with
excess damp-heat toxins invading the bones and tendons –> flowing into blood–> Qi and blood stagnation
Trauma, bone fracture –> invasion by
external toxins
What are the 3 stages S/sx of Non-headed Bone Gangrene?
Initial-
Acute general S&S: severe chills, high
fever, dry mouth, scanty urine
Severe pain in local area, difficulty with
movement, slight redness and
hotness in the skin, obvious swelling
In severe cases, may appear extremely
high fever, restlessness, delirium
T: yellow-greasy coating, P: slippery-
rapid
Suppuration Stage-
Pus is formed in 3-4 weeks, redness
and swelling in local areas,
distending pain in bones,
continuous high fever
After Rupture Stage-
Pus becoming thin from thick,
wound is difficult to heal and
forms fistula
What are the 3 stages S/sx of Non-Headed Huan Tiao Gangrene?
Initial-
Chills, fever, dull pain in hip joints, no
skin discoloration, limited movement,
pain gradually aggravated
T: yellow-
greasy coating, P: slippery-rapid
Suppuration Stage-
Severe burning pain, reddish skin,
swelling diffusing to low back and
thighs, continuous high fever, a
sense of fluctuation with pressure
which indicates the pus is formed
After Rupture Stage-
Pus becoming thin from yellow-
thick, wounds are usually hard
to heal, may be developed with
joint deformity, inability of
movement
What is Huan Tiao gangrene?
It is an acute suppurative condition occurring at Huan Tiao (GB30)
What is bone gangrene?
It grows deeply on the bones due to toxins.
Where does gangrene mostly occur?
It mostly occurs on the long bones of the limbs.
What are the symptoms of gangrene?
Local swelling, fixed severe pain, pus dribbling after rupture, and difficulty healing the wound.
What complications can gangrene cause?
It can form a sinus and damage the tendons and bones.
