FUNGI B7 Flashcards
fungal cell wall
Chitin
cholesterol like (cell membrane)
ergesterol
Can inhibit bacterial ribosome with very low toxicity, why?
70S (50S + 30S)
Lipid A
LPS
Acid fast=
Mycolic Acid
Yeasts:
- Single celled
- Reproduce by BUDDING (bacteria like)
- Yeasts like to grow at parasitic form 37 degrees
- Candida (very common yeast)
- Cryptococcus neoformans (only yeast that has a capsule)
If there is a yeast surrounded by a big halo it is always
cryptococcus…
Histoplasmosis: hides in
caves and chicken coops
Molds:
Filamentous fungi
- hyphae - Grow at saprophytic 25 degrees
What is a primary fungal pathogen?
-can infect a healthy person
Number one opportunistic pathogen is:
Candida albicans
- in babies oral thrush - women- vulvovaginitis
Dimorphics may disseminate from
lungs to other organs
Actinomyces and Nocardia:
-Looks like mycelia
Actinomyces looks like
sulfur granules
Nocardia: branching and
filamentous-stains partially acid fast, (often mistaken for acid fast organisms like TB, when it is NOT acid fast organism)
-can be confused with an acid fast organism
