fungal infection Flashcards
fungal properties: explain the main differences between fungi (eukaryotes) and bacteria (prokaryotes), and the consequences for treatment of fungal infections
1
Q
bacteria vs fungi
A
bacteria are single-celled prokaryotes, most have peptidoglycan cell wall; fungi can be multicellular and are eukaryotes - feed saprophytically, live suspended in food source, produce spores, chitin cell wall
2
Q
2 types of fungi
A
basidiomycota (mushrooms etc.); ascomycota (90% human infections)
3
Q
consequences for treating fungal infections
A
both host (human) and fungus are eukaryotes so must target machinery which is different to humans
