A

Trench warfare

A

The use of trenches in the western front. Extended war from a few months to years of fighting, the lines rarely moved. Both sides dug long trenches that faced each other. No man’s land is the land between the trenches.

A

The emphasis on a strong military, Britain had the world’s best navy so Germany began to build up their navy and Britain felt threatened. “Glorification of the military” made governments want to spend a lot to be the best military with the most power.

Modern weponary

A

U-Boats (submarines) were used by the Germans. Both sides used aircraft for observations, limited bombings, and air battles. Planes were slow, clumsy and unreliable. Most famous pilot was a German named Baron von Richthofen (the red baron). This was the first major war where chemical weapons were used, Mustard Gas and Chlorine Gas were the two most popular weapons which caused suffocation, blindness and death.

Zimmerman note

A

Germany wrote a letter to Mexico saying that if they should go to war with America to get them out of Europe and in return they would help Mexico get their land back (texas, New mexico, and Arizona). It was intercepted in Britain and sent to the U.S and the U.S saw the letter and they were outraged, Mexico never responded. One of the final straws before america entered the war

Treaty of Brest-Litovsk-

A

Allowed Russia to get out of the war but they had to give land to Germany (Balitic states, Poland, Ukraine). Russia was a new government from the revolution and wanted to get their stuff together before worrying about wars.
