Extracellular Fluid Volume Imbalances/Dehydration Flashcards
Extracellular Fluid Volume Deficit: 2 compartments Not enough fluid in extracellular compartments: Vascular and Interstitial
Isotonic dehydration or isonatremic dehydration Occurs when fluid loss in not balanced by intake, water and Na loss are proportional.
Serum Na within Normal limits/slightly lower
Blood vol is lowered
Hypotonic dehydration or hyponatremic dehydration Na loss is greater than water loss
Compensatory fluid shift between extracellular to intracellular
eg: prolonged vomiting, diarrhea, burns, renal disease, IV fluid without electrolytes
Hypertonic dehydration or hypernatremic dehydration Water loss is greater than Na loss
Compensatory fluid shifts between intracellular to extracellular. Extracellular component remains fairly normal resulting in delaying onset of s/s until condition becomes serious. e.g. Neurologic symptoms
May be caused by diabetes Insipidus
