Experimental Design 1 - Independent Groups Flashcards
What are the 3 (4) experimental designs?
1) Independent groups
2) Repeated measures. (+ Counterbalancing)
3) Matched pairs
What are the 4 steps to Independent groups?
1 - Recruit a group of participants.
2 - Divide them into two equally sized random groups.
Group 1 = IV set for condition 1.
Group 2 = IV set for condition 2.
3 - Measure the DV for each group.
4 - Compare the results for each group.
What are the two advantages of Independent Groups?
1 - Less demand characteristics, the ppts do not know what the change in IV is.
2 - Less order effects, people will not get bored or tired because it it quick.
What are two disadvantages of independent groups?
1 - Investigator effects, because they are being carried out at the same time you cannot have the same investigator.
2 - Group differences, the results are not necessarily comparable because all individuals are different.
