Aims and Hypotheses Flashcards
What are research aims?
The stated intentions of what question(s) are planned to be answered.
What is a hypothesis?
A formal, unambiguous statement of what is predicted.
What is the short hand for the Null hypothesis?
H0
What does a Null hypothesis say (basic)?
That it will not work.
What does a Null hypothesis say (complex)?
A statement of no difference between the populations being studied.
How do you write a Null hypothesis?
“IV will have no effect on the DV”
What is the short hand for a Directional or Non-directional hypothesis?
H1.
What is a Directional hypothesis?
Prediction of the direction of the effect.
How do you write a Directional hypothesis?
“four way arrow IV will four way arrow DV”
On a Directional hypothesis, do you need an four way arrow on both the IV and DV?
Always on the DV, if needed, on IV.
What is a Non-directional hypothesis?
An anticipation of a difference, but not on the direction.
When would you use a Non-directional hypothesis?
When you are 100% certain, through common sense to previous research.
If a question says “write an appropriate hypothesis” when asking you to create an experiment bases off previous research, what hypothesis would you write?
Non-directional hypothesis.
How do you write a Non-directional hypothesis?
“IV will have an effect of DV”
