Correlation Analysis Flashcards
What is a correlation?
A method of data analysis used to Dina an association (or relationship between two co-variables.
When does correlation show cause and effect?
Never.
What does a correlation show?
How two variables are related. How tow variables interact.
How is a correlation usually shown?
Using a scattergram.
When is a correlation perfect?
When every point hits the line of best fit.
What is a correlation coefficient?
A number between -1 and 1 that indicates the strength and direction between the two co-variables.
What does a correlation coefficient of -1 show?
Perfect negative relationship.
What does a correlation coefficient of 0 show?
No correlation.
What does a correlation coefficient of 1 show?
Perfect positive relationship/
What range of correlation coefficients show a strong relationship?
0.9 - 0.65
What range of correlation coefficients show a (positive/negative)(no adjective) relationship?
0.64 - 0.35
What range of correlation coefficients show a week relationship?
0.34 - 0.05
What is the difference between a correlation and an experiment?
An experiment is looking for a cause and effect (IV and DV), in a correlation, a just looking for a relationship.
What are to advantages to using a correlation analysis?
1 - You don’t need to set it up, a lot less effort compared to a lab experiment.
2 - Don’t need to worry about ethics.
What are two disadvantages to using a correlation analysis?
1 - Without cause and effect, this method is less useful.
2 - You cannot control the CV’s.
