Q

Describe the life cycle of Oesophagostomum spp..

A

ingested L3 arrest in noduals in the sm & lg gut of the host where they molt to L4’s (arrest can be up to 1 year pending favorability of enviromental conditions) –> syncrinized emergence of L4 and mature to adults in the lumen of the lg gut –> eggs laid in high #’s

  • maturation of egg –> L3 can take as few as 10days in a favorable enviroment

Q

Sows tend to show clinical dz more than other species. what are the CS’s of the pig?

PPR plays a roll in the transmission of the Oesophagostomum spp. in pigs. how does this PPR favor the parasite?

A

anarexia, wt loss w/ decreased milk production- rarely diarrhea will be seen

PPR favors the parasite because it allows a “easier” transmission to the offspring if PPR occurs when farrowing.

Q

larval stages of Oesophagostomum spp. cause _______ in an acute form of the infection that is seldom seen.

The chronic form can cause __________ and is usually seen in adults that have patent adults with larva emerging.

A
  • enteritis caused by larva (NOT patent = No eggs)- hyperplasia and ulcerations are prominent when infection pressure is high
  • diarrhea that is from puddy-like to mucopurulent green putrid smelling diarrhea

Q

Transmission of the parasite can be slowed or broken by what means?

A

improve hygienic condition expecilly the farrowing sow & reduce egg excreation/ clean up after the animal the best you can –> larva tent to have low motility so they can be found around feces and in soil near the feces to be ingested = clean pasture

Q

what is used to Dx this in animals?

A

egg counts; CS’s & +/- necropsy

  • keep egg counts with in reason cant kill them all if you try you increase resistance
