Exam III - Neospora spp. Flashcards
Even though Neospora spp. has a world wide distribution who is/are the final and intermediate hosts?
Final host = Dogs & other canids
Intermediate hosts = Dogs, cattle, sheep, white tailed deer
What is the stage of Neospora spp. used for ID in the final host and what does it look like?
Sperical oocyst, colorless, thin, smooth outer wall ~12um
what is the infective stage of Neospora for the intermediate host?
sporulated oocyst
Neospora sporulates outside of the host after passing an oocyst. Asporulated oocyst contains 2 sporocytes each with 4 sporozoites.
Does sexual reproduction occur in the final host or the intermediate host of Neospora spp. ?
the final host intestine is the site for gametogony (=sexual repro)
what is the most common way for canines & cattle to become infected as the intermediate host for Neospora?
Transplacentally. Tachyzoites can cross the placenta to infect & replicate in the fetus. eventually cysts of bradyzoites are formed. cysts are found only in neural tissue (ie. CNS & retina)
= cause of abortion
what are the site of infections for the final and intermediate hosts of Neospora spp.?
Final host = epithelial or other cells of the intestine.
Intermediate host = many types of cells with a predilection of the CNS
What are the pathologies/Clinical signs associated with Neospora spp?
***** Abortions in cattle 3 months from term (4-6months) - usually the only clinical sign in dairy and beef cows***** repeat abortions can occur
Dog: most common lesion occur in the CNS, heart, skeletal muscle, and liver but all organs can be affected. IH - tachyzoite asexual repro causes distruction of the intestinal epithelial cells.
what is the perfered Tx for Neospora spp.?
No drugs are effective against the cysts - (IH)
prevention is key = prevent feces contamination of water and food.
T or F
there is a vaccine avalible for cows in their first trimester as an aid to reduce abortions caused by Neospora spp.
True.
Must be used in a “healthy” cow
T or F
Neospora spp. is resposible for 10 to 20% of beef cattle abortions world wide.
False
10-20% of dairy cattle abortions world wide.
Dont get cought on the test
Dx of Noespora spp. can be done in what way?
What is an added benefit to running this test?
Serological testing of serum or CSF/ samples from necropsy.
benefit = differentiated from Sarcocystis spp. (cattle); S. neurosa (horses); & Neospora caninum (dogs) = cause of abortion ID’d
