Exam I - Paragonimus kellicotti Flashcards
What is the common name for Paragonimus kellicotti?
Lung fluke
What is/are the final host(s) for Paragonimus kellicotti?
dogs, cats, carnivores
What is/are the intermediate host(s) for Paragonimus kellicotti?
snails, crayfish
Describe the appearance of Paragonimus kellicotti adults
Adults are ovoid, up to 16 mm, reddish brown, occur in pairs and look like coffee beans with spiny cuticle
Describe the appearance of Paragonimus kellicotti eggs
Eggs are oval, yellowish brown, up to 110 um with distinct operculum
Describe the life cycle of Paragonimus kellicotti
- Eggs pass from a pulmonary cyst containing the flukes to a bronchiole, and are swept up the tracheobronchial tree, swallowed, and passed out in feces. When eggs reach water, miracidia develop & penetrate the snail.
- Cercariae emerge from the snail, infect a crayfish, and encyst as a metacercariae (infective stage).
- When a dog or cat ingests the crayfish, the juvenile cyst excists in the intestine, penetrates the gut wall, migrates through the peritoneal cavity migrating to the lungs to mature in the lung parenchyma near a bronchiole.
- Pairs are found in cysts and adults live for up to 4 years. PPP is 4-10 weeks.
What is the PPP for Paragonimus kellicotti?
PPP is 4-10 weeks
What is/are the site(s) of infection for Paragonimus kellicotti?
In cysts in the lung parenchyma
Desribe the pathogenesis associated with Paragonimus kellicotti.
Developing flukes cause formation of a cyst
Describe some clinical signs associated with heavy infections of Paragonimus kellicotti
Heavy infections lead to a severe cough, pneumonia, and death
Which diagnostic tool(s) would be appropriate for diagnosing Paragonimus kellicotti?
Radiographic lesions reveal cysts in lungs,
Typical eggs may be found on fecal flotation but are usually distorted by the solution.
Sedimentation is the method of choice.
Describe potential treatment options for Paragonimus kellicotti
Praziquantel is effective against Paragonimus kellicotti
