Exam II - Order Piroplasmorida Flashcards
What is the name of the condition associated with *Babesia *spp?
Canine babesiosis, canine piroplasmosis
What is/are the host(s) for Babesia spp?
Dogs. Occasionally humans
Describe the appearance of Babesia spp trophozoites
In stained blood smears, you can see trophozoites in red blood cells. Trophozoites are round, ovoid, elongate, amoeboid, pyriform, club-shaped trophozoites, in pairs as pyriform merozoites or in tetrads as cruciform merozoites and measure 5 um
What is/are the site(s) of infection for Babesia spp?
Erythrocytes
Describe some clinical signs associated with Babesia spp
depression, anorexia, anemia, splenomegaly
How would you diagnose Babesia spp?
Trophozoites in peripheral blood smear using Giemsa stain
What are some treatment & prevention options for Babesia spp?
Antiprotozoal therapy is effective, but not approved in USA. Tick control is important (Rhipicephalus sanguineus)
Describe the Babesia spp life cycle
Dog is inoculated by tick vector. Babesia sporozoites enter the bloodstream and multiplty by shizogony in erythrocytes. Host cells rupture and new organisms penetrate new cells.
Ticks become infected by ingesting infected blood from an infected dog. This causes tick eggs in female tick to become infected, which continue to multiply to infect tick larva, eventually causing small pyriform bodies in the salivary cells, and forming sporozoites, which are inoculated into a new host.
Entire process takes about 7 days
What does Babesia spp sexual reproduction take place?
in ticks
What is/are the host(s) for Theileria (Cytauxzoon) spp?
Bobcats
Describe the appearance of Theileria (Cytauxzoon) spp
Small organisms (1-2 um) in red blood cells
Which tick is responsible for transmitting Theileria (Cytauxzoon) spp to the cat?
Amblyomma americanum
What is/are the site(s) of infection for Theileria (Cytauxzoon) spp?
Blood
What are some clinical signs associated with Theileria (Cytauxzoon) spp?
Pyrexia, anemia, icterus, dehydration, death in a few days
