Exam 4 Part 5 Flashcards
Inner ear disease characterized by vertigo, hearing loss, tinnitus, aural fullness; episodic low-frequency hearing loss
Meniere’s disease
Sudden onset of vertigo with no other auditory symptoms; typically happens due to inflammation of CN VIII
Vestibular neuritis
Observed following Dix-hallpike, site of lesion is typically posterior semicircular canal
Benign proximal positional vertigo (BPPV)
BPPV at a young age is due to what?
Impact
BPPV at an older age is due to what?
Otoliths settle and accumulate
Particles in the fluid of the ear
Otoliths
When vestibular mechanisms are damaged or diseased, patient experiences whirling or spinning sensation
Vertigo
Rapid rocking movement of the eyes. There are connections between the vestibular portion of the 8th nerve and the oculomotor nerve.
Nystagmus
Onset of dizziness and vertigo
D: gradual, V: sudden
Pattern of dizziness and vertigo
D: Continuous, V: episodic
Intensity of dizziness and vertigo
D: mild, V: severe
Duration of dizziness and vertigo
D: hours/days, V: minutes/seconds
Head motion of dizziness and vertigo
D: slight, V: marked
Hearing loss/tinnitus prevalence of dizziness and vertigo
D: rare, V: often
Uses cold and warm air or water in ear to stimulate vestibular system; Examiner observes and records patient’s nystagmus to determine if the direction relative toward irrigated ear is normal
