Equine respiratory ddx Flashcards
1
Q
Inflammatory airway disease ( IAD)
A
- chronic inflammatory disease a part of the equine asthma syndrome
- ** younger horse, present with exercise intolerance, and cough **
- ** DOES NOT have increased RR at rest **
( not like RAO ) - BAL fluid –> can be an increase in almost any inflammatory cell
( RAO - primarily neutrophilia)
2
Q
Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO)
“heaves”
A
- chronic inflammatory disease a part of the equine asthma syndrome
- ** older horse, present with increased RR/RE, cough, and nasal discharge **
- more severe CS such as heave line, auscultable crackles and wheezing, flared nostrils at rest
- ** INCREASED RR AT REST ** ( unlike IAD)
- BAL fluid - significant neutrophilia ( rather than general increased inflammatory cells like with IAD )
