Inflammatory airway disease ( IAD)

A
  • chronic inflammatory disease a part of the equine asthma syndrome
  • ** younger horse, present with exercise intolerance, and cough **
  • ** DOES NOT have increased RR at rest **
    ( not like RAO )
  • BAL fluid –> can be an increase in almost any inflammatory cell
    ( RAO - primarily neutrophilia)

Recurrent airway obstruction (RAO)

“heaves”

A
  • chronic inflammatory disease a part of the equine asthma syndrome
  • ** older horse, present with increased RR/RE, cough, and nasal discharge **
  • more severe CS such as heave line, auscultable crackles and wheezing, flared nostrils at rest
  • ** INCREASED RR AT REST ** ( unlike IAD)
  • BAL fluid - significant neutrophilia ( rather than general increased inflammatory cells like with IAD )
