Hypoderma bovis or H. lineatum
A
- adult flies lay eggs on the lower limbs of cattle over the summer –> the larvae penetrate the skin and migrate to either the spinal canal or esophagus –> by early winter, the larvae arrive in SQ tissues of the back and make breathing pores
- cyst/warble stage (4-8 weeks) –> 3rd stage larvae drop to the ground –> LC complete
Dx- ID 3rd stage larvae
Tx - pour on moxidectin ( lactating/ pregnant patients) OR injectable anthelmintics ( doramectin/ ivermectin ) for non lactating animals
