Bovine Repro/ mammary Ddx Flashcards
exclusive Teat sharply edged ulcers
–> Dx = herpes mammalitis ( reportable dz) - transmitted by insect bites ( higher in summer) –> isolate cow and have separate equipment to reduce transmission
- Chemical burns - unlikely leave sections of normal skin
- BVDV - viral lesions are crusty and raised
- Pseudocowpox - lesions are raised with an ulcerated center
Fetal presentation upon abortion from a Bovine-herpes -1 infection
- classic finding: multifactorial hepatic necrosis with intranuclear inclusion bodies
- +/- necrosis of spleen, kidneys, lungs, and adrenal glands
Bovine herpes virus -1 causes
- infectious bovine rhinotracheitis
- infectious pustular vulvovaginitis of cows
Classic lesion in aborted fetus infected with BVDV
- mummification of fetus with developmental abnormalities (brachygnathia, cerebellar hypolasia, cerebral malformations)
Classic lesion in aborted fetus infected with Brucella abortus
- suppurative bronchopneumonia
- lymphoreticular hyperplasia
Classic lesion in aborted fetus infected with Aspergillosis
- emaciation, dehydration, and scaly, ringworm- like skin lesions
- severe, necrotizing placentitis with thickened, leathery intercotyledonary area
Classic lesion in aborted fetus infected with Epizootic Bovine abortion ( foothill abortion )
- enlarged cervical LN
- spleen with thyme hypoplasia
- abortion storm in heifers or cows recently introduced to foothill region of Sierra Nevada range of CA, OR, NV
3 Big Bs of abortion
- BVDV
- Brucellosis
- IBR
What will induce parturition in most late term cows within 3 days of injection
Dexamethasone (IM) within 2 weeks of normal term
- giving it with prostaglandins will increase efficacy and shorten time to induction ( 1.5 days)
GnRH
initiates release of LH from the anterior pituitary
human chronionic gonadotropin
luteotrophic
Estrogenic therapy in food animal
NOT ALLOWED
- may be teratogenic in pregnant animals
- associated in dogs and cats with cystic endometrial hyperplasia, pyometra, BM suppression and potentially fatal aplastic anemia
ECP ( estradiol cypionate ) in animals = ILLEGAL
Diethylstilbesterol (DES) use in food animal
NEVER! BANNED in food animal
