Equine Musculoskeletal: Thoracic & Pelvic Limbs (5) Flashcards
What is special about the distal portion of the limb?
devoid of muscle distal to carpus or tarsus
so, there is not as much blood supply and takes longer time to heal
What is the difference between the extensor tendons on the front vs. hind limb?
front limb: common digital extensor tendon and lateral digital extensor tendons are separate
hind limb: long digital tendon and lateral digital tendon merge (can transect and horse can return to athletic use)
The SDF tendon inserts ______
on flexor surfaces of proximal phalanx and middle phalanx on palmar/plantar surface
tuber calcanei
The DDF tendon inserts on _____
inserts on flexor surface of distal phalanx on plantar surface
Where does the digital flexor tendon sheath begin and end?
begin: distal 1/3 of cannon
end: within hoof near the navicular bone near interphalangeal joint
What is this structure?
digital flexor tendon sheath
What does the flexor manica encompass?
superficial digital flexor tendon
deep digital flexor tendon
The medial & lateral components of the flexor manica attach to ______
middle phalanx
Label 1-5
- superficial digital flexor tendon
- deep digital flexor tendon
- flexor manica
- deep digital flexor tendon
- superficial digital flexor tendon
A horse has fluid draining on its limb. Which structure(s) are likely affected?
fetlock joint - either metacarpophalangeal or metatarsophalangeal depending on if limb is lthoracic or pelvic
A puncture wound was identified on an equine thoracic limb, shown around the red star. It travels from palmar side of manus and got into the flexor sheath. Identify the joint possibly affected and the green and yellow structures. Which muscles are likely affected?
this is the fetlock joint - specifically the metacarpophalangeal joint (green)
yellow: proximal sesamoids
superficial digital flexor, deep digital flexor, suspensory apparatus (interosseous)
What is the suspensory apparatus also called?
interosseous muscle - CT, a ligament
What are distal sesamoidean ligaments?
continuation of suspensory ligament distal to sesamoids
distal to proximal (medial and lateral) ligament
stabilize pastern region
Label 1-6
- extensor tendon of interosseous medius
- interosseous medius
- extensor tendon of interosseous medius
- superficial (straight) sesamoid lig.
- middle (oblique) sesamoid lig.
- distal sesamoidean ligaments
Which ligaments comprise the distal sesamoidean ligaments?
superficial (straight) sesamoid lig.
middle (oblique) sesamoid lig.
