EQ2 – How is London Changing? 5.6 – Urban areas can be improved Flashcards
What is the difference between regeneration and rebranding?
The difference between regeneration and rebranding is
- Regeneration is:re-development of an area (usually former industrial or housing) to improve it.
- Rebranding is:when an area changes its image.
When and what was done to regenerate London Docklands?
?
Explain the positives of this regeneration/rebranding, include: social, environment, economy
12,000 jobs will be created in the area of the Olympic park.
It will create 9,000 new homes, with 50% going to housing associations for affordable housing or social (council) housing.
Population has risen by 58% since 1981 in Newham, its London`s fastest growing borough of London. This creates spending and more jobs and investment. Stratford is the most connected station in London with nine different public transport lines changing there!
Explain the negatives of this regeneration/rebranding,include: social, environment, economy
Old communities were broken up. People were forced to leave the area and move out of London to Chigwell, Essex to find new homes, others had to seek smaller houses.
Some traditional businesses e.g. pubs and shops have close and new services for the wealthier newcomers have replaced these.
Rental costs have also shot up and a combination of rising rents make it increasingly different for households on low incomes to find accommodation in the area - they leave!
Since 2012, Newham has recorded the largest property price rises of any London borough and the area around East village has emerged as a “buy to let” hotspot.
Who were the winners and losers with this scheme? Did everyone benefit?
?
Explain what sustainability is?
Sustainability is meeting the needs of todays population without impacting the needs of future generations.
Explain how London has been made more sustainable: jobs, recycling, green spaces, transport and housing
