EQ1 – What is the scale of global inequality and how can it be reduced? A study of developing country - Malawi. 2.1 There are different ways of defining and measuring Flashcards
Define development (2)
Development is the economic, social, and political progress a country or people make. To be beneficial, it must be sustainable.
Compare the three different aspects of the development (3)
Social would affect the people and the way they live.
Economic would affect money.
Political would affect the way the country is run.
Write out 4 key words for each development indicator listed below:
GDP, GDP per capita, GNI, Doctors, GINI, Gender, HDI, Corruption.
GDP (Gross Domestic Product) = the total value of goods and services a country produces in a year.
GDP per capita = GDP divided by population so that it shows the average wealth per person.
GNI (Gross National Income) = the total value of goods and services produced by a country and companies working overseas.
Gini (Inequality Measure) = this shows how equally wealth is shared in the country and it is shown in a score between 0 (everyone equally wealthy) and 100 (very unequal).
HDI (Human Development Index) = looks at 3 indicators - life expectancy, literacy, and GDP per capita. A score is given between 0 and 1 where 1 is the best.
Corruption Perceptions Index = a measure of the level of government openness. A score is given between 0 and 10 where 10 means an honest open country and 0 is very corrupted.
Will a developed country have a high or low score for the above?
GDP = High score
GDP per capita = High score
GNI = High score
Gini = High score
HDI = High score
CPI = High score
Explain why HDI is considered a composite indicator of development (2)
HDI is considered as a composite indicator of development because it is made up of 3 indicators: have the ability to read and write, having a good job/wealth, and have if they have good or bad health in the country that is developing.
Explain why solely using GDP might give an inaccurate view of
development (2)
It does not show if people are in good or bad health and if they have the ability to read and write. Because it is only focused on how many goods or products are sold within a year.
Write out 4 key words for each demographic indicator listed below:
Birth rate, Death rate, Fertility, Infant mortality, Maternal mortality, Life
expectancy. Will these increase or decrease with development?
Birth rate = how many children are born within a year per 1000.
Death rate = how many people die within a year per 1000.
Fertility = average number of births per women in her reproductive life.
Infant mortality = number of children who die before their first birthday within a year per 1000.
Maternal mortality = number of mothers who die during their pregnancy within a year per 100,000
Life expectancy = shows the average age a person can live, measured in years - man and women.
Compare how demographic data changes as a country develops (4)
Demographic data changes as death rate is high
What does a population Pyramid Structure Graph show (1)
?
Draw a structure graph of a developing and developed country (2)
?
Annotate (explained labels) both graphs to describe the birth rate, infant mortality, death rate, life expectancy, age of population (youthful, ageing) on each graph
?
Explain why fertility rate decreases as a country develops (4)
?
