Q

Describe London’s Site, Situation and Connectivity

A

Londons site has massively improved by services such as hospital and schools, making it more easier and reliable for people and local businesses.

Londons situation is excellent because being close to Europe, London can transport materials by sea and by air. Internationally, Londons time zone helps its economic growth today.

Londons connectivity is really improving meaning that more tourists and businesses etc can travel much quicker to their destinations. For example if someone lands at Heathrow airport and travels to central london, they can get the Heathrow express to London Paddington within 15 minutes rather than getting a bus. This makes tourists and businesses move quickly around the country with fast public transport services. However the traffic in London is very heavy during rush hour.

Q

Explain how London is significant nationally, regionally (European) and globally (world)

A

London is significant nationally because the UK’s fastest rail services link London and major UK cities. Manchester and Birmingham each have three fast services an hour. Future travel times will be quicker still, with HS2. However, these times distort the UK. While urban core regions are brought closer to London, peripheral areas seem a lot further away.

London is significant regionally because most major A roads and motorways lead to London, linking it with other major cities. It’s a radical network-roads converge in London like spokes of a wheel.

London is significant globally because London has the worlds second biggest international airport at Heathrow. But add together international passengers at all its airport and it is by far the worlds longest international air “hub”. Eurostar also brings European major cities within a few hours travel of London.
