NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
What type of Eng is the T700-GE-401C?
Front-drive turboshaft engine consisting of 5 sections: inlet, sompressor, combustor, turbine, exhaust.
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
The engine incorporates
Integral waterwash manifold, IPS, Top-mounted accessory section, engine-driven fuel boost pump, HMU, EDECU, Self-contained lubrication system, Eng condition monitoring and diag provisions.
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
The Engine Inlet Section includes:
Cowling, fairing, swirl frame, front frame, main frame, accessory section, and scroll case
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
How does the air flow through the inlet?
Air passes through the inlet cowling (can be heated by 5th stage bleed air via inlet anti ice). The inlet fairing is also perforated with small slits to allow fifth stage bleed air to heat the exposed inlet surface for anti-icing puposes. Next, the intake airflow passes to the swirl vanes (impart rotation on the air and are hollow to permit passage of 5th stage bleed air fo anti-icing puposes)), the IPS, and then compressor/combustion
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
How does the air flow through the IPS and onward?
Air from the swirl vanes throws particles outwards to the collection scroll. Particles are then dumped overboard via the blower assembly
From the IPS, clean air, free of foreign particles then passes through the deswirl vanes which provide smooth air to the compressor.
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
What type of Compressor do we have?
5 stage axial and single stage centrifugal rotor/stator assembly
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
Combustion Section Type and description
Flow-through annular combustion chamber with 2 igniters and 12 fuel injectors that receive fuel from the ODV, supplying atomized fuel for combustion
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
What drives the Compressor and AGB?
The Ng turbine. It is a two- stage, air cooled, high performance axial design.
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
How many stages does the Np turbine have?
2 stages that turn the turbine shaft
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
What is the Np turbine shaft type and what is its relationship to Ng
The Np turbine hsaft is coaxial, and it turns inside of the Ng shaft
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
What is the Np shaft connected to
The Np shaft extends through the front of the engine where it connects to the High speed shaft, which then turns the input mod.
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
Where is TGT sensed
In between Ng and Np
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
30% of Eng air is used for combustion.. what is the other 70% used for?
Compressor inlet Temp air (T2)
Compressor Discharge pressure air (P3)
Combustor and turbine cooling
Engine oil seal pressurization
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
Where is the accessory frame mounted
mounts to the rear of the main frame at the 12 o’clock position above the scroll case
NATOPS Chap 2
Engines
How is the AGB driven and what is mounted on it?
The AGB is driven by a rotor via radial drive shaft from the Ng Turbine drive shaft.
The rear face of the AGB provides drive pads for the Engine Starter, HMU, IPS blower, and ODV. The fron face provides pads for the alternator and Engine driven fuel boost pump.
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
The APU is…
“a gas turbine engine consisting of a power section, a reduction gearbox, appropriate controls, and accessories.”
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
The APU accessory gearbox provides…
a mounting pad for the hyd starter and output driver for the APU fuel assembly, oil pump, and air-cooled ac gen.
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
How is the APU lubricated?
via a self-contained oil system
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
What is the APU fuel consumption rate?
150lbs/hr
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
WARNING: Uncontained APU failure.
The APU does not incorporate a compressor or turbine wheel containment device. An uncontained APU failure may result in injury to ground personnel and/or damage to flight critical components including the tail rotor drive shaft
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
What is the Prime/Boost Pump used to do?
It is used to prime the engine or APU fuel lines and provides fuel under pressure to the APU during starting and operations at pressure altitudes above 8000’
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
What controls and monitors the APU and what does it do during the APU start??
the ESU/DESU (Electronic Sequence Unit/Digital Elect. Sequence Unit).
If the start sequence fails or a parameter is exceeded dur operation (with the exceptio nof APU OIL TEMP HI), the DESU/ESU will automatically shut down the APU
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
What does APU FAIL indicate
The APU has failed due to High Ng, Low Ng, High TGT, Low TGT, Low oil pressure, or start sequence failure.
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
What are the APU system accessories?
The accessories include a prime/boost pump, hydraulic accumulator (with hand pump), hydraulic starter, and ac generator.
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
What is important to remember in order to retain the APU BIT codes?
In order to maintain BIT codes, dc power is required and the APU CTRL swith must remain in the ON postion.
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
What does placing the APU CTRL switch to the On position iniitiate?
It initiates teh start sequence which causes the ESU/DESU to send a signal to open the APU start valve, releasing the hydraulic accumulator charge to the starter.
NATOPS Chap 2
APU
What may you do if the APU does not start and the APU ACCUM LOW advisory and APU ACCUM LOW caution light are not illuminated?
A start may be attempted by simultaneously moving the APU CTRL switch to ON and actuating the manual START/OVERRIDE lever located on teh accumlator manifold. APU accumulator pressure will be dumped to the starter to turn the compressor until the APU has reached a self-sustaining speed
NATOPS Chap 2
Engine Start, APU
Will the APU start the Engines regardless of the Air Source Position?
Yes. It will still provide pneumatic power for engine start regardless of the AIR SOURCE ECS/ START switch
NATOPS Chap 2
Engine Start, Crossbleed
What happens when you press the starter switch with the Air Source switch in the Engine position?
It will simultaneously open the start valve on the receiving engine and the crossbleed valve on the donor engine.
