Endocrine System Ch 11 Flashcards
Hypotalumus
Secretes inhibiting hormones and releasing hormones to anterior pituitary gland
Endocrine system
Provides slower longer lasting hormone secretion into and circulated by the blood
ACTH Adrenocorticotropic Hormone acts on adrenal cortex
Adrenal cortex increases in size and secretes three hormones
Mineralocorticoids=MCs. Aldosterone alters sodium n potassium Fluids and electrolytes
Glucocorticoids GCs. Cortisone ( increases in stress)
Androgen= sex hormones small amt in all genders
Thyroid gland THC
Secretes thyroid hormones
Calcitonin
Secreted by the thyroid gland inhibits breakdown of bone causinga decrease in blood calcium level
Parathyroid
Secrete parathyroid hormone which stimulates breakdown of bone mineral which increases blood calcium level
Hypersecretion
Production of too much hormone by a diseased gland
Hyposecretion
Production of too little Hormone
Non steroid hormone
First messenger=proteins on outside of cell ( key n lock)
Second messenger= action triggered by first messenger. Alters cells activities
Steroid hormones
Slower than non steroid hormones
Go through cell membrane right to nucleus
Examples:Estrogen and corticoids
Homeostatic feedback: Negative
Negative feedback- reverse the direction of a change in system
Example- blood glucose regulation
Insulin
Homeostatic feedback : positive
Positive feedback: uncommon mechanism
Increases a change
Example- labor (contractions)
Oxytocin
