Endocrine system Flashcards
the endocrine system
Made up of glands, organs, and hormones. Works with the nervous system to regulate body function and maintain homeostasis through feedback loops.
glands include
Hypothalamus
Pituitary gland
Adrenal glands
Thyroid gland
Parathyroid glands
Pancreas
Gonads
what is hormones
Defined as chemical substances synthesized and secreted by a specific organ or tissue, carried by the blood stream to other cells or organs, to produce a particular regulatory effect
diagnostic procedures for the endocrine system
Many of these tests are blood, urine, or saliva tests that determine an excess or lack of a particular hormone in the body.
stimulation testing
involves giving hormones to stimulate the target gland to determine if the gland is capable of normal hormone production.
suppression testing
involves giving medications or substances to evaluate the body’s ability to suppress excessive hormone production
procedures for testing
- Water deprivation test: deprive pt. of water and see what body does
- Dexamethasone suppression test
- Fasting blood work
- Thyroid scan
- TSH levels
pituitary gland location
Pituitary gland is located underneath the hypothalamus, at the base of the skull, the pituitary gland is regulated by the hypothalamus
anterior pituitary gland secretes
six hormones while the posterior pituitary secretes two hormones.
- thryoid-stimulating hormone
- adrencorticotropic hormon e
- luteinizing hormone
- follicle stimulating hormone
- prolocatin
- growth hormone
thyroid stimulating hormone
Stimulation of the thyroid gland
Adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH):
Stimulation of the adrenal glands to secrete glucocorticoids
Luteinizing hormone
- WOMEN: stimulates maturation of ova and ovulation
- MEN: stimulates production of testosterone
Follicle‑stimulating hormone
- WOMEN: stimulates growth of ovarian follicles and estrogen secretion
- MEN: stimulates sperm production
proloactin
Stimulates breast milk production during lactation
growth hormone (GH)
Stimulates protein synthesis and growth of muscle and bone
