Management Encopresis

A
History
- Soiling, ?enuresis, emotional issues
Many cases are secondary to other issues e.g. constipation, fissures, toilet phobia, attentive problems - explore these!
Rule out organic causes e.g. Hirsprung’s, spinal cord disease
Examine - anal fissures, anal tone, other causes constipation
Investigate - AXR
Management:
- Education to parents
- Treat contributing factors e.g. constipation
- Regular toileting, stool diary, sitting 2-3x day after meals, no holding on
- Medications: stool softners, enemas
