Constipation management
A
History:
- Toileting schedule/stools/pain/bristol stool chart/blood + mucous
Any nappy use / incontinence of bowels
?Organic cause e.g. hypothyroid, coeliac, spinal cord, CMPI
?Required admissions previously
Management:
- Regular toileting / positioning
- Bowel diary
- Consider AXR if concerns
- Increasing fluid intake (PEG flushes)
- Increasing physical activity
- Consider medications - might need to be what child finds most tolerable aiming 1 x per day
- Outpatient dissempaction plan
- Education for parents around stooling and no harm from long term laxative use
