ASD

  1. Defects reciprocal social interaction
  2. Repetitive restricted stereotyped behaviours

Can occur as part of genetic condition e.g. T21, TS, Fragile X, or on its own

Symptoms:
- Impaired social interaction, prefer own company, preoccupation/special interest, rituals, anxiety, aggression, specific learning disorder, developmental delay

Diagnosis: DSM-5, validated screening questionnaires

Ix: karyotype, Fragile X testing, lead (if pica), urine metabolics, vision/hearing, neuropsych

Educational psychologist assessment

TREATMENT
- Education/support for parents 
- Autism Australia 
- Early intervention 
Medications:
- Clonidine (reduce anxiety/overarousal)
- Risperidone (reduce irritability)
