Emergency Procedures Flashcards
Scaffold
Are FF’s allowed on unoccupied scaffolds?
How long to you allow a hoist motor to cool for?
Can you allow workers to operate a jammed hoist?
Who preforms window removal or glass cutting?
What do you do for an unoccupied swinging scaffold?
NO FF’s allowed on unoccupied scaffolds
Allow hoist motor to cool for 15 min
Do not allow workers to operate a jammed house
Squad or rescue remove windows or cut glass
Unoccupied swinging scaffold, locate nearest window and secure scaffold with utility rope
Confined space
What are the 3 types of atmospheric conditions?
Do you always have to wear an SCBA?
What % of casualties started out as rescuers?
3 types (ATE) asphyxiant, toxic, explosive
Wear SCBA until atmosphere is verified safe
60% of casualties started as rescuers
Confined space
What 5 things must a member know before entering a confined space?
1-hazards within space 2- how to escape 3- how to communicate with outside 4-how to use equipment to perform rescue 5- first aid and CPR
Confined space
TorF members entering shall be secured with a safety line. Only members trained in confined space rescue should attempt entry, except in extreme circumstances.
True
Confined space What are considered safe atmospheric conditions: 1- oxygen levels 2- flammable range 3- level of CO 4- level of hydrogen sulfide
1-oxygen between 19.5-23.5%
2-not over 10% LEL
3- CO not over 35ppm
4- hydrogen sulfide not over 10ppm
VENT
Flashover occurs when temps exceed _#_degrees
What stage is after flashover?
Wha is pyrolysis?
Flashover occurs when temps exceed 1100 degrees
Fully developed is after flashover
Pyrolysis is the transformation of materials into their most basic compound when subjected to heat
Vent
What stage does rollover occur in?
Control door and window openings until when?
Should you communicate with the ladder officer when vertical ventilation is complete?
Rollover in growth stage
Control door and window openings until a charged hoseline is advancing within the fire area AND extinguishing fire area
Yes communicate with ladder officer after vertical vent complete
Vent
TorF
Roof FF should immediately begin vertical vent tactics unless ordered by ladder officer not to
True
Vent
Good or bad
The engine officer transmits that they are putting water on the fire, the OV hears this and VEIS
Bad, the engine officer transmissions take as a signal to prepare for entry, OV must get permission from ladder officer in area to be vented
Vent
Hi-rise
Who gives order for vertical ventilation?
Horizontal vent of fire apartment controlled by ladder officer, ALL other vent controlled by IC in hi-rise
Low-rise FDMP vent is emphasized and conducted earlier then hi-rise
Vent
Generally smoke explosion is close or remote from fire area
Backdrafts will occur in proximity or distant to the main body of fire
Smoke explosion will be remote from fire area
Backdrafts will occur in proximity to main body of fire
What is the vehicle airbag 5-10-20 rule
When using the hurst where does the power unit get placed?
Who ensures that the battery of the car is disconnected
5” from side airbag, 10” from drivers airbag, 20” for passenger airbag
Hurst tool power unit to the front or rear of vehicle
Ladder officer ensures battery is disconnected
Vehicle disentanglement
What are the 2 rules for stabilization of vehicle?
Vehicle on side, when is it stabilized and what is a good choice for entry?
Do you cut the top or bottom hinges first when removing a door?
2 rules- stabilize as found and never right a vehicle with victim inside
Vehicle on side stabilized before entry and front or rear window is a good choice for entry
Cut the top hinges first
Vehicle disentanglement
For total roof removal do you carry the roof towards the front or rear?
Are fabric blankets a good choice to cover a victim when cutting glass?
What are the 4 tools used to cut windows?
Carry roof towards front of vehicle, this avoids dragging cut windshield over victims
Use plastic not fabric
4 tools- windshield saw, sawzall with WOOD blade, beluga auto glass knife, and Axe (last resort)
Water rescue
Does bunker gear with an SCBA sink instantaneously?
When removing a victim from cold water should you rub/massage them?
How much faster is loss of body heat in cold water than in air?
When does hypothermia begin
Do not rub or massage, bring to warm area or cover with warm blankets and remove clothing
25x faster in water
Hypothermia begins when core body temp drops below 98.6
Water rescue
When there are 2 victims in the water can the secondary rescue team enter the water?
When responding to a water rescue when do you don a PFD?
Can bunker boots be worn in the water?
Secondary rescue team can enter water when there is a second victim
Don the PFD prior to boarding apparatus when responding
Yes you can wear bunker boots
Water rescue
What do you do if the tether line gets tangled?
How many people can the water torpedo keep afloat?
How long is the tether line for water rescue?
If tether line gets tangled use the quick release
Torpedo can keep 2 people afloat
200ft tether line, surf tether is 600ft
Water rescue
Does the point of entry have to be the point of exit for safety reasons
When victim is in stokes, how does the top strap get buckled, middle strap bottom strap?
Point of entry and exit do not need to be the same
Top strap under armspits over chest
Middle strap over one thing and under the other
Bottom strap over both ankles
Water rescue
When does the equipment get inspected, what doe it get hung to dry out and for how long?
Do you store with the zipper open or closed
How many lengths of hose can a 45 min cylinder or apparatus fill in about 1 min?
Inspect in JAJO, (Jan, April, July, october)
Store with zipper open (ready to go)
5 lengths of 2 1/2” hose in approx 1 min
Ice rescue
When is ice considered safe?
Where do you attach the tether line for a ice rescue?
Do you wear a PFD over a cold water suit for water rescue?
No such thing as safe ice
Attach tether line to chest for ice and back for water (Icechest and wetback)
Only wear a PFD over the water rescue suit for ice
Surf rescue
What is the faster water of a rip current called? Where it loses power is called what?
Who uses the surf board?
Neck of rip current is fastest water, head is where it loses power
Primary rescuer tethered with torpedo (600ft tether)
Secondary rescuer uses surf board if conditions permit
Dive assist
Where should a witness be kept?
Who determines access point?
Engines shall hook up to hydrant and stretch and charge a line, why?
Witness kept at reference point
Units on scene determine best access point
Engine hook up, stretch, and charge a line to cool back up divers or decon divers or victims
*engine dedicated to CFR duties, staged as close to exit as possible and can help transport
