● Implantation of fertilized ovum in a site other than
endometrial lining of the uterus
● May occur on the surface of the ovary or in the
cervix
● Most common site is in the fallopian tube - distal
3rd
○ Approximately 80% occur in the ampulla
○ 12% occur in the isthmus
○ 8% are interstitial or fimbriae
ECTOPIC PREGNANCY
CAUSATIVE FACTORS
● Tubal damage - PID
● Previous tubal surgery
● Congenital anomalies of the tube
● Endometriosis
● Previous ectopic pregnancy
● Presence of an IUD
CLINICAL MANIFESTATIONS
● Missed menstruation period
● Abdominal pain
● Vaginal “spotting”
● Amenorrhea
● Nausea and vomiting
● (+) pregnancy test
● (+) sharp, stabbing pain in one of her lower
abdominal quadrants at the time of rupture,
followed by scant vaginal spotting
demonstrate the ruptured tube and blood collecting in the peritoneum
transvaginal sonogram
Either a falling _____or ______________ level
suggests that the pregnancy has ended
